So when we found out Savannah had a hearing loss, we made a decision to bring her up to learn oral language. To listen & to speak. ASL never even crossed my mind to be honest. I don't have anything against it, but being an hearing family our decision was made easy for us.
We had always thought about taking family Sign Language classes so that we could all communicate when Savannah had her "ears" off, but we decided against it when we found out the cost.So today i took my eldest two boys to the park for a play. The park is new & it was really cool.
My eldest Hayden kept walking over to these small signs & was really intrigued by them.
I walked over to notice that they where sign language signs. Every letter of the alphabet was around this children's park. It was awesome!
Being that we have never used ASL or spoken about it, i found it really lovely that my boys where interested & where trying out all the signs. The excitement when we spoke about them & they tried to master it with their fingers was VERY CUTE :)
So maybe its time to introduce some sign language to our family. After today i think it ll be really great for my boys & myself & hubby to have a special bond as a family to communicate with Savannah when she is unable to hear us.
here is a video i took & a picture of the boys
here we have the school and they are a constant recource for us...they loan many things, books coloring books...movies and more..AND they had someone come into the home to teach sing (for free) to the family...and extended family and friends if we chose....
ReplyDeleteWe have 2 Early intervention Deaf Schools in area area, the one which we are enrolled in, is strictly oral learning. The other school is a bi-model school, sign & oral. At first we chose not to go that route. They provide free ASL services whereas the oral school we attend do not. We still have services like borrowing books, music classes, cooking classes for the older children, integrations programs & a kindergarten at the school. So i assume it works similar to yours. The only difference for us is we do not have ASL. We have to go outside of the school to get those services. Once you are enrolled in a school you are not allowed to attend another school or their services. We are happy where we are, but we are now looking into private ASL classes. they cost about $150 for 3 months for family classes :)
